Megan Rapinoe is one of the U.S.’s most important players at the World Cup this summer. The World Cup is taking place over the course of one month, from June 7-to-July 7, in France. The bulk of the games will be taking place in June.
June also happens to be LGBTQ+ Pride month in the states, and Megan Rapinoe happens to be lesbian. She came out in 2012, almost seven years to the day of the U.S.’s first match of the World Cup. In addition to sporting red, white and blue, Rapinoe will be hard to miss on the field with her new bright pink hair.
While this might just seem like an in your face way of screaming, ‘I’m GAY!’ it symbolizes a bigger cause the U.S. captain’s dedicated herself to: Activism and visibility.
After appearing on the cover of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue with partner and world class basketball player Sue Bird, Rapinoe stated, “Visibility is important.”
That it is. Megan Rapinoe’s queer visibility may seem innocuous or an afterthought, she has proven herself an amazing queer role model. As someone who identifies as queer myself, every time I see Rapinoe, I see someone who hasn’t shied away from who she truly is and someone who is fearless.
In a world riddled with homophobia, and an administration doing everything it can to stigmatize queer people, Rapinoe is a shining pink star.
