In late June, six Arizona Wildcats were taken in the MLB draft, and two have decided to pursue that dream immediately. 2016 season stars JJ Matijevic and Jared Oliva signed with their parent clubs – the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively – and have been working away at making their MLB dreams a reality.
Matijevic debuted for the Tri-City ValleyCats, the Single-A affiliate of the Astros, on June 24th, and made a splash that same day. He got his first hit, a single, and added two more hits before the night was over.
His first RBI came in his third game, and his first career home run in just his 11th. In 23 games, he has a .279 BA, .779 OPS, 14 RBI, and 4 HR.
Oliva debuted on the same day, and registered an RBI on his first night with the West Virginia Black Bears, the Single-A affiliate of the Pirates. In 21 games, he is hitting .267 with ten RBI, six doubles, and a triple.
All six players who were drafted have also gotten their names on the “MLB Wall” which recognizes every Wildcat that has played baseball professionally.
The Black Bears play the Batavia Muckdogs (Miami Marlins affiliate) later today in the second game of a three-game series. The ValleyCats also play later tonight in the second game of their three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland A’s affiliate).
