Maryland Lucks Out With 2016-17 Big Ten Schedule

Maryland's tough season ahead just got a little easier.

The list of home and road opponents for the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team was released, and it’s safe to say the Terps got a favorable outcome.

It wouldn’t be outlandish to label the coming season as a lost cause, although it looks more like a slight rebuilding season. The return of Melo Trimble should help, but the Terrapins aren’t the National Championship favorites they entered last season as.

Part of their downfall in 2015/16 was their poor play on the road. The XFINITY Center is one of the most raucous venues in all of college basketball, and Mark Turgeon’s team has been quite successful playing at home there. Playing at Michigan State, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Purdue last season was tough, and that is exemplified by the 2-4 record from those six games (with just a five-point victory over Ohio State and a three-point win at Wisconsin).

This coming season, the Terps’ toughest opponents on the road will be Michigan and Wisconsin. They’ll play both home and away against Iowa and Ohio State, with both teams likely to be tough to beat but more beatable than in years past. Indiana, Michigan State and Purdue will all make their way to College Park for a change this year, which could be huge in what could be a difficult push toward the NCAA Tournament for an inexperienced Maryland squad.

The full schedule has not been released yet, although we know that the Terps will host Pitt in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and travel the short distance to face District rivals Georgetown. The remaining match-ups that will be announced could make or break this season for Maryland, but its safe to say the Big Ten schedule gives Terps fans a reason for a bit of optimism–something they might have been short of beforehand.
