Let me just start off by saying WHAT. A. GAME. The Titans rallied from a 17-3 3rd quarter deficit on Sunday to stun the Eagles in overtime by the score of 26-23.
Two unbelievable performances from the franchise quarterback and wide receiver.
The Titans started off the game in the right direction. The offense was moving on all cylinders and the Marcus Mariota to Corey Davis connection got off to a great start.
The Titans got a field goal on the opening drive to start off the scoring, but after that, points were hard to come by in the first half. Both defenses tightened down the hatches and didn’t let up any ground. Except for this 56 yard touchdown by Jordan Matthews right before halftime. Malcom Butler was in coverage and seemed to think he had safety help. Kenny Vaccaro covered the tight end which made Butler and Matthew one on one and Carson Wentz threw a dime.
As we entered the second half, both offenses started to heat up. The Eagles and in particular, Zach Ertz, really got into a rhythm. The running game especially got it going as Jay Ajayi was carrying piles and gassing the Titans defense. Eventually, Alshon Jeffery scored from 16 yards out to take a 17-3 lead. At that point, a Titans win looked bleak. The offense was being beaten left and right by the Eagles defense time and time again. No one would’ve thought a win was possible, until Marcus Mariota pulled off one of the best comebacks we’ve seen in his career.
It all started with Mariota running in for a score to cut the lead to 17-10. This really got the crowd back into the game and the defense took advantage of that, forcing a turnover due to a strip sack coming from Harold Landry.
With that turnover, the Titans cut the lead to 17-13 with the help of a Ryan Succop field goal. The Titans defense then forced a three and out and got the ball back to the offense. The Titans got the drive going with a long completion from Mariota to Davis to be deep in Eagles territory.
The Titans then got down inside the Eagles 20 and took the lead thanks to this dime by Mariota to Tajaé Sharpe.
That led to Nissan Stadium erupting and instantly momentum switched back to the Titans. The Eagles then got the ball back later on after the Titans failed to convert and run out the clock. Jake Elliott hit a field goal with 16 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. That’s when we saw some of the best football of Marcus Mariota’s career.
The Eagles won the toss and elected to get the ball and score. The Titans held for another Jake Elliott field goal which put the Eagles up 23-20. All the Eagles needed was a stop and them and their enormous traveling fanbase left Nashville with a smile.
Not so fast.
The Titans got the ball back with an opportunity to win the game. With the game on the line (a few times) Mariota found Taiwan Taylor for a HUGE 4th down conversion.
The Titans then converted two more 4th down conversions setting their selves up for a walk off Corey Davis touchdown catch, who had a career day of his own with 9 catches for 161 yards and this touchdown.
This was a historic win for this football team. Beating the defending super bowl champs is one thing, but out-coaching them to win a football game at home, that’s special. After the Miami loss to open the season, we were unsure how Mike Vrabel would respond, but winning three straight has his players and fans believing in him.
It just shows how far this team, hell even this franchise has come. Marcus Mariota looked comfortable all game long and it showed in the box score throwing for 344 yards with 3 total touchdowns.
The Titans now sit at 3-1 holding a tie for the division lead with Jacksonville. Next for the Titans? A road game to take on Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Catch ya next week!
