With the recent trade activities happening throughout the league, most notably with what’s happening in Los Angeles and Miami. As a result, it’s easy to overlook the fact with what’s been happening with the Orlando Magic.
Sure it’s glaring that the Magic’s rival, the Miami Heat has just acquired All-star Jimmy Butler, as well as how Final’s MVP Kawhi Leonard of the Toronto Raptors has decided to jump ship and join the Los Angeles Clippers. However, the Magic have been doing some offseason moves of their own. One that may actually benefit the team this upcoming season.
A couple of days after Fourth of July, and right around the start of the summer league, the Magic front office has decided to waive Timofey Mozgov and stretch out his contract.
Basically this means, while the Magic had the opportunity to pay Mozgov roughly $16 million this upcoming season, doing so would result in the team going over the luxury tax.
This means two things: the Magic now have the opportunity of paying Mozgov around $5 million for the next three seasons, and the Magic have the opportunity to sign another players, possibly Khem Birch from the previous season.
Birch provided the team with much needed boost when the other big men of the team needed to rest during games. In addition, it could be argued that Birch was one of the key players in helping the Magic sneak into the playoffs last season.
If the Magic do decide on adding Birch, the organization will have a near identical team from last year.
