With less than a week away, the NBA Draft is almost here – something that the Orlando Magic are all too familiar with.
Since 2012, the Magic have been rebuilding their team through the draft, as well as acquiring players via draft night trading.
Over the years this includes drafting players such as: Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon, Mario Hezonja and Jonathon Isaac, to name a few. As for acquiring players through trades, during draft night, this includes players such as Serge Ibaka and even Brandon Jennings.
Basically, the Magic’s recent history may offer fans some insight on how the team may operate this upcoming Thursday on draft night.
Seeing what road the Magic will travel
Maybe the Magic could get some new players by trading away their pick as well as some of their current players, although in the event that this plan does not pan out, then this would be seen as a very foolish plan, similar to how the Magic traded away Oladipo for Ibaka.
One thing is certain is that the Magic’s new front office, which is led by Magic president, Jeff Weltman and general manager, John Hammond. Weltamn was the previous general manager for the Toronto Raptors and played a part in having Terrence Ross being traded to the Magic for Ibaka. Hammond had previous experience as the general manager for the Milwaukee Bucks, and had a hand in selecting Giannis Antetokounmpo.
In hindsight, the actions of what Weltman and Hammond had on their former teams shows how much insight, research and luck their front offices had in the keeping the teams competitive not just currently but in the future as well.
While, the most recent actions that Hammond had on the team was signing Mo Bamba and Markelle Fultz, fans should not write them off just because both players have yet to play a full season in a Magic uniform; of anything, the fans should keep an open mind into what the GM will do on draft night.
Catch the NBA Draft, this upcoming Thursday, 7 p.m. on ESPN.
