With the trade deadline approaching, the Philadelphia 76ers have an opportunity to improve the roster just two months before the playoffs begin.

The Sixers may not have the resources to trade for players themselves, but it may not be necessary if the right players become available in the buyout market.

The KnicksMavericks trade is an example of how the Sixers can capitalize on trades that don’t even include them.

Buyout candidates emerging

The blockbuster Kristaps Porzingis trade to the Dallas Mavericks surprised many players, fans and media members around the league.

The trade is interesting to the Sixers for other reasons. DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews were shipped to the Knicks in order to match salaries.

From the Knicks’ perspective it makes more sense for them to either flip Jordan and Matthews to other teams or to just buyout their contracts.

Matthews and Jordan would help them win games now. Their contributions would not help the Knicks goal of tanking to get the first pick in the 2019 draft.

Jordan would likely not be interested in playing for the Sixers because of Joel Embiid’s presence. He probably wouldn’t want to play backup minutes.

But Matthews is someone that the Sixers could target because of his skillset. His career 38 percent 3-point shooting would help an already impressive Sixers offense.

More importantly, his perimeter defense, which is arguably the Sixers biggest weaknesses, would be an upgrade over any option currently coming off the Sixers bench.

He isn’t a lock down defender, but he would help improve their defensive woes immediately due to his size.

The Sixers can offer him a chance to play on an elite team, while still getting quality minutes. They should attempt to sign him if he becomes available after the trade deadline.

According to Kyle Nuebeck of PhillyVoice, they might already be thinking about it.

All-Star Simmons

The NBA announced the reserves headed to Charlotte later this month, and it includes Ben Simmons.

Simmons will join Joel Embiid as the Sixers representatives. They are the first Sixers teammates to be selected as all-stars since Allen Iverson and Dikembe Mutombo in 2002.
