New Jersey’s No. 7 recruit Bo Melton signed with Rutgers on April 4, 2016. After an explosive senior year it seems that Rutgers has acquired a natural playmaker at wide receiver . The true freshman will join the team in the fall, bringing powerful youth to the 122–ranked passing game last year.
At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, Melton doesn’t dominate in stature, but his abilities on the field speak far beyond his frame. The recruit’s senior tape featured plays being made out wide and in the slot.
When Melton is running routes, he is crisp and quick with a ball hawk mentality when the ball is in the air. On the ground, both off the catch and out of the backfield, the offensive weapon is actually remarkable to watch. The way he is able to cut on a dime, and then plow through multiple defenders with U-Haul like leg drive highlights his ability to accumulate yardage. The evidence is here in a video which was once featured on SportsCenter.
Nothing is more exciting than ‘can’t touch me’ speed, and Melton certainly has that. His speed (4.3-40 time) speaks for itself, and is put to good use. The speedster earned two NJSIAA Group Two Championship first place awards and one first place award in the Cape Atlantic League Championship for the 100 meter dash. Fans should expect to see that raw speed transition nicely to the gridiron.
Although he is a true freshman, expect to see the four star recruit get on the field. Melton is only one piece in this fight at the receiver position, and healthy competition is great for any team. It will be up to him to overcome youthful challenges and prove to the coaching staff that he can play with the big dogs.
