In a weird turn of events, the Jacksonville Jaguars have traded Julius Thomas to the Miami Dolphins. The weird part of this deal is that Branden Albert is not part of this deal. Miami will send a late-round 2017 draft pick in exchange for Thomas. The Jags and Dolphins have engaged in talks of a trade for a day or two now. The trade talks saw OT Branden Albert heading to Jacksonville in exchange for Thomas. Reports later came out saying Thomas would not be in a deal for Branden Albert.

The next reports saw Albert being sent to the Jaguars for a late 2018 draft pick. It appeared that Thomas would stay in Jacksonville, but that is not the case. Thomas is now a Miami Dolphin. For this deal to go through, Thomas had to agree to restructure his contract with Miami upon arrival. Thomas has three years left on his current deal and was set to make $7 million in base salary this year. The Dolphins will most likely end up paying Thomas less as he has struggled production wise in his two years in Jacksonville.

Thomas’ Low Production

His low production is due to injury problems. He played in only nine games last year and twelve games in the 2015 season. A deal to send Branden Albert to the Jaguars is still in the works, but will not include Thomas. I am a bit confused why Miami would not just do a straight up deal player for player. Clearly, they wanted Thomas and they were looking to get rid of Albert.

The Dolphins were originally going to cut Albert until the Jaguars expressed interest in a trade. It is not sure which side didn’t want to do a Thomas for Albert deal, but that deal would work out for both teams. Albert will most likely end up in Jacksonville. He has been asked to talk with Jaguars management in Jacksonville most likely to discuss if he is willing to sign a contract extension. If these talks go well, Albert should be a Jaguar. It looks like Thomas holds the better trade value so I do not know why they didn’t do Thomas for Albert and a late-round 2018 draft pick.
