It was a lackluster night for the Atlanta Hawks as they debuted their new 50th anniversary jerseys and court. They took a third straight loss, 124-109, this time to the Detroit Pistons, and it was not pretty from the start. The Pistons controlled the game the whole way, and the Hawks weren’t able to cut deep into the lead at all.

Too many threes

The Hawks have once again allowed the opposing team to shoot threes at an amazing rate. It seemed like every possession the Pistons were pulling from deep and making it. Langston Galloway and Reggie Bullock had big games and the Hawks couldn’t stop them at all. They may be the worst team at defending the three so far in the season, and it mostly has to do with closing out. Players also have to be aware of off-ball screens and cutters, which is how many of them find themselves open on the 3-point line.

Rebounding

We already knew the Hawks were going to have problems in these games rebounding the ball. Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin are one of the best front court duos in the league and are starting to find their stride. Drummond’s body of work around the paint is amazing, and the Hawks had a hard time all night defending him. He had multiple putback attempts and was able to kick the ball to shooters- a big reason why the Hawks were struggling defending the perimeter. Drummond also had several blocked shots, which makes him even more dangerous around the rim.

Slow start

The Hawks got off to a slow start which was the cause of their many problems against Detroit. Shots weren’t falling, they weren’t playing good defense, and the energy just wasn’t there. They’ll have to try to get back on track in these next couple games against west coast teams. They have the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets next, which are teams capable enough of getting up big on them early in the game.

Mediocrity and heartbreak. That’s what your life consists of being an Atlanta sports fan, and I’ve lived it for years now. The Atlanta Hawks have been labeled as mediocre for 10 years straight. Even when they were one of the best teams in 2015, they were swept by the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals. The Falcons are nothing different. Mediocre enough to get to the playoffs, and then vulnerable enough to break your hearts at the end. I know you watched the Super Bowl. So as an Atlanta fan you’re either going to get one or the other. It’s sad to say, but I’m numb to it. One day we’ll break this curse, the question is when?
