Game 1

Weather played a factor into the beginning of the game. With Houston having an all-turf field, including the pitcher’s mound, the field was too slick was pitcher’s to begin with.

And even when the game started, but it didn’t seem to affect the Aggies. A&M put up a two spot early on a single from Braden Shewmake with Nick Choruby scoring on a throwing error by Baylor CF Richard Cunningham.

The Aggies would add another run on a SAC fly from Hunter Coleman. After a walk and hit batter to load the bases for Baylor, Aaron Dodson hit an opposite field grand slam to give the Bears a 4-2 lead.

Baylor’s pitching staff would implode in the top of the 6th inning. Shewmake would hit a 2-R HR to give A&M to tie the game and run Baylor starter Montana Parsons out of the game. Kyle Hill would come in and allow a runner to reach on error, then a run scored on SAC fly to give the Ags a 5-4 lead.

Three consecutive walks and a single brought in two more runs for A&M. Baylor would add one run in the bottom half of the inning and A&M would score one of their own in the top half of the eighth inning.

Kaylor Chafin went 3.2 IP of scoreless ball out of A&M’s bullpen to close out the game.

#1 Seed Houston (40-19)

Houston is coming off of an American Athletic Conference Championship where they ran through the tournament pretty easily. Offensively, Houston is lead by AAC Player of the Year Jake Scheiner (.347 avg., 78 H, 48 R, 18 2B, 17 HR, 57 RBI) and Corey Julks (.323 avg., 64 H, 7 HR, 6 3B, 14 SB). On the bump, the Coogs are led by AAC Pitcher of the Year LHP Trey Cumbie (1.88 ERA, 10-1, 14 GS, 80 K in 96.0 IP), LHP John King (2.99 ERA, 7-1, 11 GS, 3 CG, 35 K in 75.1 IP) and LHP Aaron Fletcher (2.19 ERA, 2-1, 8 SV, 19 AP, 36 K in 37.0 IP).

#2 Seed Baylor (34-21)

After going two and out in the Big 12 Tournament, Baylor looks to bounce back from the poor showing. This will be their 1st appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last 5 years. Baylor is led offensively by Shea Langeliers (.324 avg., 66 hits, 42 runs, 38 RBI) and Aaron Dodson (.335 avg., 10 HR, 38 RBI). On the mound, they are led by RHP Montana Parsons (2.81 ERA, 5-3, 14 GS, 67 K in 83.1 IP) and RHP Troy Montemayor (1.08 ERA, 3-1, 12 SV, 24 AP). Baylor faced Houston earlier this season and took 2 of 3 from the Cougars.

#3 Seed Texas A&M (36-21)

The Aggies are coming off a disappointing regular season that led to an early out in the SEC Tournament on the first day. They come into the NCAA Tournament being one of the “Last 4 In’ to the tournament. Offensively, they are led by SEC Freshman of the Year Braden Shewmake (.343 avg., 80 H, 10 HR, 64 RBI, 11 SB) and Nick Choruby (.305 avg., 64 H, 50 R, 11 SB). The pitching staff is led by RHP Brigham Hill (2.96 ERA, 7-3, 95 K in 85.0 IP) and LHP Kaylor Chafin (1.99 ERA, 7-1, 24 AP). A&M played Baylor earlier this season in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in Houston and lost 6-3.

#4 Seed Iowa (38-20)

Iowa played their way in the NCAA Tournament by winning the B1G Tournament last week in Bloomington, Indiana. The Hawkeyes are led at the plate by the nation’s HR leader Jake Adams (.339 avg., 79 H, 27 HR, 70 RBI) and Mason McCoy (.328 avg., 79 H, 54 R, 34 RBI). On the mound, they are led by RHP Nick Gallager (3.39 ERA, 8-1, 83 K in 90.1 IP) and RHP Josh Martsching (2.36 ERA, 5-0, 7 SV, 27 AP).
