Nikola Jokic broke onto the scene this year as a franchise player. He’s a big man that can do it all, and that doesn’t just pertain to what he can do on the court.
While most of the top players, and well, almost all players in the league grew up with big hoop dreams and clear talent, this was not necessarily the case for Jokic.
Luckily his dad was a big fan of the game. If not for that, Nikola may have quit on basketball far too early. He definitely was on the huskier side during his youth and looked nothing like a ball player.
That may have been because that’s not exactly what he was. Although he would eventually find a love for the game, his first love was actually horse racing.
Imagine a near seven footer on the back of or behind a horse. The way most of us outgrow phases throughout life, Jokic basically outgrew the sport of horse racing.
Once he sprouted up in height it didn’t take long for his skills to be noticed. He took what he had learned playing point guard as a kid and utilized it to make himself into one of the best passing big men in the NBA.
But he wasn’t that dominant big man just yet. When he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets he was actually asleep and had to be called and told by his brother. In a way it seems quite fitting for such a slept on pick to have actually been asleep when drafted.
From there the rest is history, part of NBA history to be exact. But the record books unfortunately don’t include these kind of odd stories of every player which is why this one needed brought to light. It’s not everyday that a future NBA star grew up with big horse racing dreams.
