On Tuesday morning, Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times tweeted out that projected starters Houshun Gaines and Adonis Alexander were to be suspended indefinitely by the football program. Gaines-a redshirt freshman defensive end that has come on strong during the spring, recording two sacks in the spring game- was charged with underage possession of alcohol and marijuana possession. Alexander, who recorded eight starts in 2015 at safety, was charged with just marijuana possession.
This is a major blow to the Hokies’ starting group, with Gaines and Alexander expected to start at defensive end and safety, respectively. There already wasn’t much depth in either of these groups, with a lot of youth backing up the starters. Bud Foster’s group is going to have that next man up mentality to get through this, as no one knows how long these two will be out.
