New Head Coach Justin Fuente has wasted no time in Blacksburg in terms of recruiting. This was evident this past Spring when the former Memphis coach acquired Jerod Evans from Trinity Valley Community College – the number one JUCO recruit in the country. What people haven’t noticed is what this new staff has done with the class of 2017.
Tech’s class is currently filled with eight 3-star commitments. Their most recent ones being Dalton Keene, a 6-5 athlete that will primarily play tight end, but will be able to move all over the field in Fuente’s system; Caleb Farley, another athlete that played quarterback in high school but with so many young players at the position, look for him to be moved to more of a slot player that is going to be asked to make plays in open space.
Their number one prize, though, is Tyjuan Garbutt, another 3-star recruit that is going to bolster Bud Foster’s Defensive Line for the next few years. He’s a big body that will continue to grow and should be someone to keep eyes on, as he is Fuente’s number one recruit so far for 2017.
The Hokies currently rank 25th in the country and 5th in the ACC with their 2017 class. They are continuing to do what they do best and recruit kids that aren’t getting the national attention that some other players are. Once they step on the field, they are developed into Hokies. We will see if Fuente and Foster can continue climbing the recruiting rankings and build a foundation for years to come in Blacksburg.
