In what was an epic weekend of recruiting for Michigan, the lone five-star of the group of the latest commits, defensive end Stephen Herron Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky, is nothing short of an exceptional talent in the class of 2019.

As a sophomore, several recruiting outlets, such as Scout.com, have described Herron as a “complete package.” At 6’3″ and weighing nearly 240 pounds, Herron’s sophomore highlight tape shows a good mix of defensive awareness in both pass rush and run defense.

After his commitment on July 29, Herron was able to answer some questions about why he chose Michigan, and what he looks to get out of his time in Ann Arbor.

Conversation

Q: “First off, what set Michigan aside from every other program that recruited you?”
A: “It just felt like home for me, somewhere where I wanted to be and I loved the thought of surrounding myself with those coaches and players, as well as the future recruiting classes.”

Q: “What about Coach Don Brown? For a guy who is a defensive wizard, how much did he sway your decision?”
A: “It’s reassuring that I have one of the best defensive minds in college football.”

Q: “What does it mean to you now that you are a Michigan man? And what can Michigan fans expect from you in your four years in Ann Arbor?”
A: “It means the world to me, the fact that I can express my athletic ability and my academics all in one place is great. I hope to be the best D-lineman Michigan has ever seen, someone that would be possibly up for some of the biggest awards in the nation.”

Q: “Last question, which of your attributes do you think are developed, and what are you looking to improve on?”
A: “I think I’ve developed great speed off the edge, great hands and knowledge of the game. I’m looking to improve on everything, I’ll be going to college to do exactly just that.”

While he still has another two years of high school left to continue to develop his game, Stephen Herron Jr. has the potential to write his own destiny at Michigan.
