Former Georgia basketball great Yante Maten is currently in the process of pursuing his dream to play in the NBA. After a stellar four years in Athens, Maten was rewarded with an invitation to the NBA combine and has now began working out for NBA teams. One of those teams is the Atlanta Hawks.

Maten projects to be either a 2nd round pick in the NBA draft or sign somewhere as undrafted free agent. He could become the first Georgia basketball player drafted in the NBA since Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was selecteD by the Detroit Pistons in the 2013 draft.

Maten’s skill makes him an ideal power forward in today’s NBA. While he may be a little undersized for a big man, his diverse skill set makes up for it. He possesses a variety of savvy post moves and can easily step out and shoot the three if necessary. He’s also an excellent free throw shooter and is an above average rebounder. To succeed in the NBA, he’ll have to improve his low post defense and become a more confident ball handler.

Georgia fans would love for Maten to stay in the state to play for the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks have four picks in the upcoming draft and will almost certainly look to add some depth to the team’s front court.

Regardless of where Maten plays in the NBA, it’s nice for Dawg fans to watch the Georgia legend achieve his dreams. Maybe he will get to suit up for the Hawks and stay in Georgia for the foreseeable future. Only time will tell.
