SEC officials have confirmed that former Alabama defensive back Maurice Smith will be allowed to transfer within the conference. Smith intends to play his final season of college football at the University of Georgia after graduating from Alabama last spring. Smith chose Georgia because of his connection to the coaching staff, which is led by Kirby Smart and includes former Alabama assistant Mel Tucker.

Alabama initially blocked Smith from pursuing a transfer within the SEC, but Nick Saban and Alabama overturned that ruling on Wednesday, opening the door for Smith to appeal with the SEC office. The SEC has rules that typically prevent in-conference transfers from players with two or fewer years of eligibility remaining, but Smith has been granted a release waiver.

Smith is expected to start in the Georgia secondary, although it is unclear where he fits in the rotation. At Alabama, Smith was projected to play sparingly as a reserve and on special teams.
