We’re 36 days away until the opening kickoff inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, but on Friday, the bright lights in The Swamp shined as hundreds of high school prospects camped here at the University of Florida for the annual Friday Night Lights.

Making the short drive from Lakeland, Florida was Keon Zipperer. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound tight end recruit is one of the more versatile and explosive prospects at the tight end position in years, and Florida is aiming to land Zipperer.

The nation’s number three overall tight end told Armchair he and tight ends coach Larry Scott speak frequently, about twice a week.

“Coach Scott is like [a] father figure to me,” Zipperer said.

Despite Zipperer being a need for this class, Coach Scott doesn’t put any pressure on him committing right away.

“He doesn’t force me to commit and just tells me to take my time making a final decision.”

The Gators are striving to be the team Zipperer chooses, and with Dan Mullen and his new spread offense, their chances are good. In years past, Florida’s tight ends have been nonexistent, but in Mullen’s offense, they are frequently used.

“I see the Gators doing good this year, and I’m excited to see how they use their tight end. Their message to me is they’ll line me up and utilize me like they did Aaron Hernandez,” Zipperer.

On Friday night, this staff had another opportunity to see Zipperer’s all-around skill set inside The Swamp.

Zipperer told Armchair he doesn’t have a top list of schools right now, but Florida, Florida State, and Miami are all currently fighting for his pledge. Florida had an opportunity to move ahead this past weekend in Zipperer’s recruitment.

The tight end did drop this Tweet early Monday morning. Make of that what you will.
