Key Player of Game: Jay Ajayi
The new Eagles’ running back, acquired from the Miami Dolphins for a 4th round pick just before the trade deadline, had the biggest play of the game. It was 15-9 with the Eagles leading, but things weren’t reaching blowout level yet. That was until Ajayi ripped off a 71-yard run, which led to a touchdown that put the Eagles up 23-9. A lot of people played great for Bird Gang, but that run really blew the doors open and it’s the second big one in two weeks of playing for Ajayi.
GAME RECAP AND ANALYSIS
The first half was an ugly slop fest for both teams. For the Cowboys, QB Dak Prescott was out of sorts. He had two early interceptions, one to Rodney McLeod off a tipped ball the other picked off by Ronald Darby, who had just re-entered the Eagles’ lineup. But they still led 9-7 due do the Eagles playing an even worse game. After one of Dak’s interceptions, kicker Jake Elliott shanked a kick and then was taken to the locker room with an apparent concussion. Carson Wentz also struggled early and the Eagles failed to get a first down in the second quarter. With no kicker and a struggling offense, things were shaky for the Birds coming out of halftime.
But then, as they have all season so far, the Eagles found their rhythm and went on one of those explosive stretches. Wentz started to do incredible Wentz things and moving the chains while the running game got back on track. He ended up throwing 14 for 27 with 168 yards and 2 TDs, but the two touchdowns were beautiful passes in to traffic to Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. As good as the offense was the defense was actually better in keeping the Eagles in the game, and then unloaded when the Cowboys had to become a pass first team. Dak was only 18 of 31 with 145 passing yards and 3 INTs while getting sacked 4 times. Two of those times it was rookie Derek Barnett bringing him down and the pressure was coming at him all night.
Yes the Cowboys were missing Sean Lee and Tyron Smith, but in the second half the talent gap between those two teams was bigger than a few players. The Eagles have now won 8 straight games and continue to roll.
