The Los Angeles Chargers could have been the best team in the AFC West last season. However, should of, could of, and would of doesn’t count in the NFL. The team was a solid group, although their main issue was a defense that struggled in various areas. It was clear something needed to be fixed going into the draft.
Well, the Chargers may have hit a home run in April. They were able to fill some of the voids on their team and land some league-ready rookies that will make an impact immediately. In the first round, Los Angeles was able to steal possibly the best safety in the class by picking Derwin James. James is a good sized, physical safety that has the ability to bloom into one of the league’s best with some time.

The Chargers were the best defensive team against the pass in the AFC West and ranked third overall in the league. However, the team was 31st in the league in rush defense, and adding a safety like James can help eliminate some of those second level run defense woes. But the talented safety was not enough for the team, so they drafted linebacker Uchenna Nwosu in the second round and defensive tackle Justin Jones in the third.
Nwosa is a work in progress, although he has shown flashes of potential on the edge. The same can be said for Jones on the interior of the defensive line. Nevertheless, these two will be working with an up-and-coming dangerous combo of Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa.
With the OTA’s coming up, Los Angeles should be eager to get back on the field after their ridiculously surprising season in 2017. A couple close losses and exploitations of their defense kept them on the outside of the playoff picture.
Having said that, the Chargers are still a work in progress due to their defensive weaknesses. If they can get it together, look for this team to claim the AFC West title in 2018.
