Just as the NFL trade deadline was closing in on Tuesday, the Panthers announced a blockbuster trade that sent wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to Buffalo for 2018 third and seventh round picks.

Benjamin provides the Bills with a big, physical receiver that can complement Jordan Matthews and rookie Zay Jones to form a solid trio. As for the Panthers, Benjamin’s void leaves them without a solid number one receiver atop their depth chart.

A third and seventh round pick for Benjamin is not a bad return, but it does leave questions as to why the team would move its top option in the middle of a season that may end in at least a wildcard birth. Benjamin’s void will mean a larger role for third-year receiver Devin Funchess in the Panthers’ offense, as well as more involvement from rookie Curtis Samuel.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the trade was definitely a buzzer beater, taking place just before the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Benjamin will be reunited with Sean McDermott, Buffalo’s head coach that spent time in Carolina as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator. Both the Bills (5-2) and Panthers (5-3) are hoping to compete for at least a wildcard birth this year.
