With the Round of 16 over, almost all possible MLS clubs made it to the Quarterfinals.
In the Round of 16, there were 5 MLS teams and, considering that 2 of the teams were set to face each other, the best possible scenario was 4, but 3 moved on.
The teams that survived are New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC, and Seattle Sounders.
Let’s look at the path for New York Red Bulls.
They faced Club Deportivo Olimpia at their home in the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica and were able to come away with a 1-1 draw and a crucial away goal.
A week later, they returned to Red Bull Arena and defeated the Honduran team 2 goals to 1. Goals coming from Sean David and Bradley Wright-Phillips sealed the game for the Red Bulls.
Toronto FC were faced with fellow MLS club Colorado Rapids.
Interestingly enough, Toronto FC performed better away from home then they did at home.
Toronto FC were able to notch 2 goals at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in front of the Colorado Rapids fans.
Returning to BMO Field, both teams played to a 0-0 draw.
Seattle Sounders were probably the team out of all 4 with the hardest hill to climb. After losing 2-1 against Santa Tecla in San Salvador, there was doubt if they could make it through.
It was especially tough considering Jordan Morris’ injury in this game, which will ultimately cause him to miss this MLS season.
Against some odds, they put in a thrilling performance at CenturyLink Field by beating Santa Tecla 4-0 and 5-2 overall on aggregate.
The Sounders had 4 different goal scorers in the win- Will Bruin, Nicolas Lodeiro, Chad Marshall, and Magnus Wolff Eikrem.
FC Dallas were the last of the 5 teams from MLS, and were not able to pass through to the Quarterfinals.
Their first game saw them travel to Estadio Rommel Fernandez to play Panamanian team Tauro F.C.
With the home team scoring in the 57th minute through Edwin Aguilar, and that was enough for Tauro to go to Dallas with something in the pocket, and it would soon come in handy.
In the home and final leg, FC Dallas had to turn in a performance similar to that of Seattle Sounders.
FC Dallas were able to score 3 goals at home, but that was entirely overshadowed by Tauro’s 2 goals they were able to score.
This was extremely important and a blow for Dallas because Tauro was able to put in 2 away goals that, sadly for them, would be the deciding factor since they drew 3-3 on aggregate.
Former player Taylor Twellman was not happy with Dallas’ performance. He tweeted:
.@FCDallas losing to the 8th place in the current Panamanian league of 10 teams @TauroFC is inexcusable. I don’t care how you define it but with the amount of resources a @MLS team has in comparison this should never happen. Timing of schedule is a real issue BUT come on. #CCL

Looking at the first legs of the Quarterfinals, MLS club New York Red Bulls played on Tuesday against Tijuana and won comfortably 0-2 in Caliente in front of a very strong home crowd for Tijuana.
Toronto FC took on Tigres last night home at BMO Field and conceded an away goal. But, Jonathan Osorio’s 89th minute winner gives them the lead on aggregate.
Seattle Sounders played late on the west coast last night at home in CenturyLink Field. Against Guadalajara, they kept a clean sheet and added a Clint Dempsey winner in the 78th minute.
Each team will be challenged to hold onto their aggregate leads in their respective ties.
