Cleveland Browns trim roster and claim five players on waivers to settle their 53-man roster.

As familiar faces leave, new faces arrive. The Browns claimed a handful of players from the waivers amid other NFL teams finalizing their rosters.

Cleveland primarily went after defensive players on the waivers, only claiming one offensive player in center Aaron Neary (Los Angeles Rams). The Denver Broncos signed Neary as an undrafted free agent in 2016. After bouncing around, he earned his first start last season for the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17.

The defenders added are DL Carl Davis (Baltimore Ravens), DE Ifeadi Odenigbo (Minnesota Vikings), LB Tanner Vallejo (Buffalo Bills) and DB Tavierre Thomas (Arizona Cardinals).

Of the waiver claims – Davis is the most likely to see playing time in Sunday’s opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a former third-round selection by the Ravens and has started 12 games in the NFL. After missing the entire 2016 season due to an ankle injury, Davis came back in 2017 and started nine games racking up 19 tackles. He is expected to get time at nose tackle and serves as a solid run stopper for the Browns.

Odenigbo, a 2017 seventh-round pick out of Northwestern, didn’t play in a regular season game his rookie season. Despite only being on the Vikings practice squad last season, Odenigbo put up great numbers this preseason finishing with 11 tackles, two sacks and eight hits on the quarterback.

Vallejo appeared in 15 games in 2017, primarily on special teams. The Browns likely added him as another linebacker to add depth after Mychal Kendricks surprise departure last week. He was a sixth-round pick in 2017 by the Minnesota Vikings.

Lastly, Tavierre Thomas was an undrafted free agent this season but had a solid collegiate career at Ferris State. Another addition for depth, Thomas is insurance in case of an injury to the Browns defensive back unit. He was the only player from the Cardinals who was claimed.

Being a Cleveland Browns fan has few positives and a plethora of negatives. “There is always next year” is the infamous slogan Cleveland teams hear but for the Browns it’s different. My name is Matt Stevenson and I am a 24-year old Browns fan. I’ve spent my years pondering how a professional franchise can consistently remain at the bottom of the standings for two decades and it simply doesn’t add up. So, I became fascinated at figuring out how to fix this problem and devoted myself to writing about how the Cleveland Browns can finally become a winning organization. I graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2016 and look forward to covering the Cleveland Browns for Armchair All-Americans. I welcome all opinions and enjoy the art of a heated debate.
