The Chicago Cubs are heading to Oakland to face the Athletics for the first time this season. The three-game series begins today at 9:05 PM CT. The Cubs have won seven of their last ten games, including a sweep of the Miami Marlins, and are leading the the NL Central by nine and a half games. 14.5 games behind in the AL West, Oakland narrowly avoided a sweep by the Angels yesterday.
For Chicago, Ben Zobrist has been slashing .385/.448/.577 in his last seven games and walked in the game-tying run against Miami on Wednesday. Athletics LF Coco Crisp has been hot in his last seven games as well, slashing .357/.455/.821 with three home runs and six RBIs. Crisp also made a few great defensive plays against the Angels yesterday, robbing Ji-Man Choi of a home run and Andrelton Simmons of a double.
Chicago’s Hendricks has been quietly dominant on the mound. His 2.22 ERA is third-lowest in the National League, behind Madison Bumgarner and some guy named Clayton Kershaw, who is currently on the DL. Hendricks pitched his second complete game of the season on Monday, after a late inning comeback the night before taxed the Cubs’ bullpen. For Oakland, Overton was called up to the Majors on June 25th, and in each of his four starts he has given up at least three runs. The Athletics’ pitchers have a team ERA of 4.69, which is good for 14th in the American League.
