Georgia football is firing on all cylinders in 2018 as the Dawgs hold a 3-0 record heading into the heart of the team’s SEC schedule. This Saturday, Georgia will face arguably the best passing quarterback in the SEC in Missouri‘s Drew Lock. Can the Dawgs slow him down?
I feel like Kirby Smart has had this game circled on the schedule based on how this match-up went last season. Georgia beat Missouri 53-28 last season but the game was close in the first half thanks to Lock throwing three touchdown passes against Georgia’s defense.
The Dawgs were able to contain Lock in the second half of that game but he finished with more than 250 yards passing and four touchdowns against one of the nation’s best defenses from 2017.
The good news for the Dawgs in this game is that the team has an extremely talented secondary. Deandre Baker is arguably the best cornerback in the country and J.R. Reed is one of the best tacklers in the conference. Combine that with hard-hitting safety Richard Lecounte III and speedy freshman Tyson Campbell and you have a secondary that seems to be capable of at least slowing down Drew Lock.
I don’t expect Lock to light up the Dawgs this time around like he did last season. Georgia played Middle Tennessee last weekend so the team has essentially had two weeks to prepare for this Missouri offense. Kirby Smart’s defense isn’t going to get pushed around by the Tigers for a second year in a row. Georgia does play this game on the road but it’s a noon kickoff so the crowd won’t be as much of a factor as it could have been in a game later in the day.
The Dawgs are favored by two touchdowns by most odds makers and rightfully so. Georgia is now ranked second in the AP Top 25 poll after jumping Clemson this past weekend. Missouri also has an abysmal defense which should allow Jake Fromm and company to have a field day on Saturday.
Missouri will put up some points in this game. Drew Lock is simply too good not to have at least a passing touchdown or two. But I expect the Dawgs’ defensive backs will be up for the challenge and will show that the team hasn’t forgotten about how Drew Lock diced them up last year.
