MATCHUP TO WATCH
Texas starting pitching vs. Louisiana offense
The biggest question mark of this Texas team is the bullpen. So in this first weekend series of the season, it will be key for the Texas starters to go at least 6 innings in their starts to limit the amount of innings that the bullpen will have to throw. The nice thing for this for these Texas starting pitchers, is that Louisiana has to replace their top five hitter from 2017 when they only hit .266 as a team.
SERIES PREVIEW AND ANALYSIS
Texas has a lot of unknowns on this team, like I previously mentioned in the bullpen. But outside of the bullpen, Texas will have three newcomers starting in the field and potentially a fourth at DH. Two of those newcomers, Masen Hibbeler and D.J. Petrinsky, are guys that are expecting to hit in the meat of the order and contribute big time in their first season on the Forty Acres. Both are guys from coming from JUCO and were very successful hitters in JUCO as well as their time so far at Texas.
Some of the known for Texas will be starting pitching. Nolan Kingham slots into the Friday night starter with Morgan Cooper leaving for pro ball, Chase Shugart moving from late relief to Saturday and Blair Henley staying on Sundays right where he began last season. Kingham and Shugart are highly regarded prospects for the 2018 MLB draft and some believe Shugart could propel himself way up the draft with a successful season showing he can be a starter at a high level.
