The Michigan Wolverines finally broke the curse they’ve been under the past 12 years. A win in 2006 against Notre Dame was the last time Michigan had beaten a ranked opponent on the road – until last weekend. The Wolverines beat the Michigan State Spartans 21-7. But the rivals began feuding in East Lansing hours before kickoff.
The Spartans started their tradition of walking arm in arm from end zone to end zone a couple minutes late that morning. A few Michigan Wolverines were already warming up on the field and when the Spartans began their walk, a scuffle ensued. Following the incident, Michigan linebacker Devin Bush went to the Spartan logo and kicked his cleats into the field. This pregame commotion only added to the already high-stakes game.
At a press conference, Jim Harbaugh later went on to call the whole incident “busch league” and unsportsmanlike on Michigan State’s part. Mark Dantonio also said Harbaugh’s comments were “B.S.” Upon investigating the incident, the Big Ten determined to fine Michigan State $10,000 for violating their sportsmanship policy. Mark Dantonio, Jim Harbaugh, and Devin Bush also received public reprimands for their behavior following the incident.
On top of the pregame drama, the game experienced a weather delay in the first quarter, but that didn’t stop the momentum. Don Brown’s defense held the Spartan offense to only 94 yards during the game. Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson was able to put up 212 yards and throw two touchdown passes. The Wolverines sealed a necessary win against one of their biggest rivals, bringing the Paul Bunyan trophy back to Ann Arbor.
