The Boston College Eagles upset the Miami Hurricanes in the Red Bandana game on Friday night by a final score of 27-14. The Eagles’ offense was propelled by the return of running back AJ Dillon from an ankle injury. Dillon rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown. He started the game hot, going for 25 yards on the first play from scrimmage. This set the tone for what would be a special night for BC football. Quarterback Anthony Brown also had a strong game, completing 15 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another and only throwing one interception.
While the skill position players did a great job, perhaps the offensive MVP was the offensive line. This group kept an unquestionably talented Miami defense at bay. The Eagles were able to total 433 yards on offense. The line was pivotal in giving the quarterback time and creating holes for Dillon to run through. The Eagles likely would not have won this game without the strong showing from the big boys up front.
The Eagles defense impressed as well. Hamp Cheevers added to his interception tally by picking off Miami quarterback Malik Rosier on a tipped pass and returning it all the way to the 14-yard line. The pick was Cheevers’ fifth of the year, putting him in the lead for the ACC. Zach Allen also continued to show why he should be a first-round pick in the upcoming draft, getting a sack and six tackles on the night. The win was undoubtedly a team victory. Every player did their part in what could be the Eagles’ biggest win of the season.
BC survived the first of a challenging four-game stretch by beating Miami, but they now must continue against tougher opposition. While they are a big name program, this U is not that of old. The Hurricanes have even regressed since only last season where their defense was able to win games by themselves.
The win is important for BC’s confidence heading into their toughest road game of the season in Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech. Following that, the undefeated Clemson Tigers will come to Chestnut Hill, for what is shaping up to be the ACC Atlantic championship. The Eagles currently sit second in the division behind only Clemson, with Syracuse hot on their tails. Beating the Hokies would be monumental for BC’s season, giving them a chance at getting into a big bowl game and giving the game against Clemson real importance.
