With a 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Boston Bruins have clinched a playoff spot. Brad Marchand left the game late in the first period with an incredibly dirty and undisciplined spear to the groin of Jake Dotchin. They still managed to pull off a win against a surging Bolts team. Drew Stafford (7) netted a goal, while David Pastrnak (34) added two himself. Zdeno Chara (10) also pitched in with a power play goal. A shutout performance from goaltender Tuukka Rask set a career high of eight on the season. The Bruins are heading back to the playoffs after missing the postseason the past two years in late season collapses.
The Bruins are 18-7-0 since Bruce Cassidy took over behind the boards as the head coach. Boston will look to try to climb the rankings to avoid a first round matchup against a team that has had their number for years in the Washington Capitals. The Bruins could take a big step in that direction with a win against the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa comes into Boston on Thursday; that game starts at 7:00. It still remains to be seen if Marchand will be able to play in that game.
The Toronto Maple Leafs loss Tuesday night was also a step in the right direction. It surely aids Boston’s attempt to avoid the top team in the East. The Capitals, the very team Bruins fans lement matching up against in the first round, have assisted the climb to avoid playing them in the opening of the playoffs. With two games remaining, all eyes are on the Senators and Leafs. Both teams have games in hand on the Bruins.
