The Boston College baseball team made a great run through the ACC tournament all the way to the semi-final game, but were unable to take home the trophy after a loss to UNC. The Eagles upset both Clemson and Louisville in pool play to make it to the semis, but were dismantled by the Tar Heels.
The victory over Clemson was well-played by both teams and required extra innings to decide a winner. BC came out on top by a final score of 7-5 in 11 innings. Hitting power was the key in this victory for the Eagles, as they hit a season-high four home runs.
Cody Morissette was particularly potent from the plate, having hit two home runs and driving in three runs. Brian Dempsey and Joe Suozzi each hit one out of the park as well. On the other side of the ball, pitcher Mason Pelio recovered from a shaky start to complete a quality outing. The freshman went six innings while allowing only one earned run on three hits and struck out four.
The upset over Louisville was especially surprising considering that the Cardinals were the number one seed in the ACC tournament. This did not affect the Eagles, however, as they were able to secure their spot in the semi-finals by a final score of 5-1.
Dan Metzdorf came up clutch with an amazing performance, going the complete game while allowing no earned runs on only three hits. The senior lefty struck out seven batters and did not walk anyone. Metzdorf raised his record to 8-2 on the season, in what was a remarkable final campaign for one of BC’s best pitchers in recent memory.
The Eagles’ season ended at the hands of UNC, who swept BC in their regular season weekend series, by a final of 13-5. This was the first semi-final appearance in Boston College baseball history. Despite the great momentum after knocking off Louisville, the Eagles’ bats fell silent, while the Tar Heels stepped up at the most important moment.
Overall, this season was a huge success for a growing BC baseball program, who took a giant leap considering the team hadn’t had a winning record since 2016. With young players like Mason Pelio, Cody Morissette, and Sal Frelick already contributing in their freshman seasons, the Eagles will have a great base of talent going forward.
