Just one night after the Auburn Tigers swept the Raleigh Regional to advance to the Super Regional round, the Tigers got another big win of a different kind. The Tigers returned home to relax and enjoy the MLB Draft on Monday night. It was not only a team-bonding event, but they got to see one of their own accomplish a lifelong dream. Casey Mize, the Tigers ace, was selected first overall in the Draft by the Detroit Tigers, and he got to share the moment with family and teammates.

Undrafted to Number One

Mize came into Auburn as an undrafted prospect coming off of an injury, and he will leave The Plains as one of the greatest pitchers in Auburn history. It has been a foregone conclusion for the past few weeks that Mize would go first overall, but the moment still brought him to tears. The 21-year-old RHP has superstar potential, and he should be able to quickly move through the minors and become a major contributor for Detroit.

Mize brings a very versatile arm, and his best pitch is generally accepted to be his nasty splitter. He can reach nearly 90 MPH with the pitch and can not only draw chases from batters, but he can also turn the ball enough for it to land in the strike zone. He is a standout pitcher who has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 12. It was the moment of a lifetime that Mize will never forget. He personally thanked his parents, as well as Auburn HC Butch Thompson, for helping him get to this point in his career.

Unfinished Business

Mize will now get to pitch in the NCAA Super Regionals in hopes of helping his college Tigers team reach the College World Series. Auburn will await its opponent, the winner of Monday’s Florida-FAU winner-take-all matchup, and Mize will likely be the Friday night pitcher in the next round.
