The Coyotes have scored a surprising nine shorthanded goals to start out the season, led by the league’s top penalty kill unit (91.8 percent).

While on the penalty kill, the Coyotes outscore opponents 9-4. The four goals surrendered are the lowest in the league.

Who leads this:

Veterans Michael Grabner and Brad Richardson lead the league with three goals each while Grabner holds the lead in points (5). Derek Stepan follows behind with two goals.

Grabner needs three more to match his season record of six from 2010-11 with the New York Islanders. Richardson already reached his previous record from 2006-07 with Colorado.

Where the current team ranks in history:

In Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise history, Grabner and Richardson are tied for fourth in their season total so far. Since the franchise moved to Arizona, they tie for third behind Bob Corkum (1997-98, 5) and Trevor Letowski (1999-00, 4).

This team is also the second team since 1933-34 to score this amount in its first 14 games. Only one other team has had multiple players with three or more shorthanded goals in that span (Philadelphia Flyers, 1978-79).

If the Coyotes end with over 20 shorthanded goals, they will be the second team in this century since Ottawa scored 25 in 2005-06.

How is the power play doing?:

After scoring two goals in their previous game against Washington, the power play unit now has the same amount of goals as the penalty killing unit.

Led by Oliver Ekman-Larsson (2-3-5) in points and ice time, production has increased over the last few games. In the last five games, the Coyotes have scored five power play goals.

Part of that reason goes to Alex Galchenyuk’s four power play points (2-2) in nine games. In his seven year career, he has 82 power play points.

Some have even generated their offense mostly on the advantage. Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini both scored their two goals of the season on the power play.

Although they struggled in the beginning, the power play still has not given up a shorthanded goal this season.

What the Coyotes are doing right now is interesting and will be something to follow as the season progresses more.

I am fortunate to have grown up in California after the time that hockey became popular in the state. I fell in love with hockey attending Anaheim Ducks games and watching their Stanley Cup run in ‘07. Sports have always been in my life because my family enjoys going to sporting events and following the four major sports. Without sports, we would not be as close as we are with them in our lives. Being able to bring all types of people together to watch a game is a powerful aspect that I love. I am thankful that my family introduced me to something that would later turn into a passion.
