BC running back AJ Dillon made headlines this past week as he was named to the Maxwell Award preseason watch list for the nation’s best college football player. Dillon was a semifinalist for the award last season.

Dillon, who is one of eight ACC players nominated for the award, will face stiff competition from within his own conference with three Clemson players nominated. Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, and Justyn Ross will surely be the ACC favorites considering the Tigers’ expectations for this season.

Despite suffering multiple injuries and only playing in ten games last season, many experts are extremely high on the junior running back, considering Dillon was fourth in the ACC in rushing yards and seventh in the conference in rushing touchdowns. Additionally, AJ Dillon’s freshman year in which he was completely healthy was even more spectacular, when he finished second in the conference in rushing yards behind only Lamar Jackson with 1589 and was third in rushing touchdowns with 14, leading to Dillon being named 2017 ACC Rookie of the Year.

Dillon will want to go out with a bang in what will almost certainly be his final season at BC before heading to the NFL. His success for this upcoming season will largely depend on the play of his teammates, specifically his offensive line and quarterback.

Luckily, the Eagles will likely have no true freshman on their starting offensive line, with players returning at all five positions. Specifically, center Alec Lindstrom is a player to keep an eye on, as his brother, Chris, just departed for the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. Quarterback is also a difficult position to evaluate, as Anthony Brown was injured for parts of last season, and his play overall was very inconsistent.

In short, it can be safely assumed that AJ Dillon will have a fabulous final season at BC, but the team’s success cannot rest on his shoulders alone. His teammates and the coaching staff, who are firmly planted on the hot seat, need to put him in the best opportunities to be successful, otherwise, the team will surely fall short of contending in the ACC yet again.

Hey guys, I’m Mike Malley. I’m from Westchester, NY, just north of NYC and have been a sports fan all my life. Despite being from the Big Apple, my sports allegiances are not all to New York teams. I root for the Mets and Rangers, but also am a huge fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Heat. I also love watching soccer, especially my beloved Chelsea in the English Premier League. Now that I’m at Boston College, the Eagles are my number one priority and favorite team. I started writing for the sports section of the school newspaper my freshman year, and am super excited to be joining the Armchair team! Go Eagles!
