With the 25th pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans should select Will Hernandez.
Hernandez is one of the best interior lineman in this year’s class. At 6-2 he is a little shorter than the usually desired offensive guard, but he makes up his height with his tough work ethic. He was a four-year starter at UTEP and is the most decorated offensive lineman in school history. Hernandez has shown great flexibility and agility as well as superb upper body strength. He sometimes misses his mark with his hands because of trying to go for a big blow to the defender after the snap. However, he is a great student of the game and will be a “team first” kind of guy. The kind of player Titans’ General Manager Jon Robinson likes.
With Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin entrenched as the starting tackles and Ben Jones manning the center position, the offensive line can be a strength for this Titans team. Adding a guy like Will Hernandez to the mix will sure up the Titans’ offensive line for years to come. Hernandez was a good blocker with both run and pass at UTEP, and that should go a long way towards improving the offense. At times the run game struggled to get going for the Titans in 2017, and the passing game was downright abysmal throughout large portions of the season. Hernandez can help open holes for Derrick Henry and help protect quarterback Marcus Mariota from interior rushers which was a weakness for the team in 2017.
The Titans certainly aren’t limited to interior line in the first round of the draft. At 25, it will likely come down to who is the best player available that fits a need for Jon Robinson and Head Coach Mike Vrabel. Defensive tackle and edge rusher would also be a top need. As well as a change of pace back to compliment Derrick Henry. The options are endless and it will be intriguing to see how things are shaping up as free agency gets started and as the draft is right around the corner.
