After all of the craziness things seem to be heading back to normal on Rocky Top. Vol Twitter has settled down after Schianogate and the myriad of Rumors. There has never been a three week stretch of that magnitude in all of my 24 years as a Vol fan. It made me reflect on what my favorite moment as a Tennessee fan was?
I was 6 years old when Tennessee won their last National Championship. I wasn’t old enough to truly be a fan or remember what was going on. The first real memories I have of Tennessee football start with Casey Clausen leading the Vols in the early 2000s. I have witnessed some great Tennessee football teams and players through the years. Unfortunately I have been witness to some of the worst years in program history.
What’s My Favorite Moment As A Tennessee Fan?
I had a friend ask me the other day what my favorite memory as a Tennessee fan was. Outside of the first time watching a game in Neyland Stadium I wasn’t sure how to answer the question. Obviously there have been many great moments. Jauan Jennings‘ catch, James Wilhoit’s game winner vs Florida, all of Eric Berry’s career, the comeback against LSU in 2005, the comeback against Georgia in 2015, and many more. As I thought about which one was my favorite I kept coming back to one memory. In 2008 the Vols were ranked #2 and went up against the #1 ranked team in Memphis. The Vols came out victorious that evening and headed to the #1 overall ranking in the next polls. The first time a Volunteer team had been ranked #1 in the AP Poll since the National Championship winning football team.
Yes of course I am referencing a basketball game! Think about that for a minute……….
What I Missed?
As a 24 year old I wasn’t old enough to remember Tee Martin throwing to Peerless Price. I wasn’t old enough to witness Peyton Manning orchestrating the band. I wasn’t old enough to watch the great defenders in Leonard Little, Reggie White, Dale Carter, Al Wilson, and others.
Let’s hope Coach Pruitt is the Coach that can get Tennessee back in the national spotlight for the right reasons!
