Tom Arth was named the 23rd head coach in Chattanooga history back in December of 2016. He was the 2016 National Coach of the Year in NCAA Division III, coaching at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio.
In his four years as a head coach at JCU, he finished with an overall record of 40-8 that included three playoff appearances. After he graduated from JCU in 2003, he spent a few season as Peyton Manning’s backup in Indianapolis. Part of that time was also spent playing in NFL Europe and he was on the Green Bay Packers preseason roster in 2006.
How did they fare in 2017?
Arth and the Mocs (that could be a great band name) struggled in their first year together, going 3-8 overall. They started against the season losing to Jacksonville St, who was ranked 5th in the FCS poll at the time, by a score of 27-13 and followed that up with a 45-10 loss in Baton Rouge to LSU.
Outside of the LSU game, the Mocs lost by an average of 17 points per game. Their three wins came against VMI (63-7), #8/9 Samford (23-21) and ETSU (10-3). They also took #8/9 Wofford to double-overtime but ended up losing 24-21.
