Kevin Huerter found himself being a important part of the Hawks core in his rookie season.

Overall

Kevin Huerter was an intriguing draft prospect going into last year’s draft. It was said that teams would be interested drafting him mid first round due to his shooting intangibles. The Hawks were the lucky team to draft him at pick No. 19, as they looked to build a foundation like Travis Schlenk’s previous team, the Golden State Warriors.

To start the season, Huerter didn’t see the floor much, and if he did it was towards the end of the game. The third game of the season was where we saw a glimpse of his potential with nine points.

It took him a couple of games after that to get in a groove offensively and contribute to the team. However, it was not until the Kent Bazemore was injured and had to sit some games for Kevin Huerter to be inserted into the starting lineup for the remainder of the season.

Huerter was known for his shooting coming into the draft, but he showed throughout the season he had a variety of skills. He was one of the best defenders on the team, and coach Pierce allowed him to guard the opposing team’s best offensive player.

His passing was also a plus for the Hawks, who thrived in ball movement this season. If it’s one thing we didn’t know Huerter had, it was a dunk package, like this:

One of Huerter’s best games of the season was against the 76ers where he had 29 points and shot 11-17 from the field. It was during that stretch if games where we saw the best from Huerter scoring 10+ plus points in nine straight games.

He was a great compliment to Trae Young this season, and with them both being threats from the three point line opened up the Hawks offense. It wasn’t soon until people began to add his name into the Hawks future core with Young and John Collins.

All-Rookie Status

To cap off his rookie season, Huerter was awarded with NBA All-Rookie second team honors. He was well deserving of the award with his play this season, and this is something he can definitely build on going into next season.

Mediocrity and heartbreak. That’s what your life consists of being an Atlanta sports fan, and I’ve lived it for years now. The Atlanta Hawks have been labeled as mediocre for 10 years straight. Even when they were one of the best teams in 2015, they were swept by the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals. The Falcons are nothing different. Mediocre enough to get to the playoffs, and then vulnerable enough to break your hearts at the end. I know you watched the Super Bowl. So as an Atlanta fan you’re either going to get one or the other. It’s sad to say, but I’m numb to it. One day we’ll break this curse, the question is when?
