TCU has made it to the College World Series three years in a row and is poised to make another run next season. Key freshman like Luken Baker and Josh Watson will be back again next year but to the surprise of many, Brian Howard and Elliott Barzilli will also return.
Both Howard and Barzilli will be back for their senior year even after being drafted. Howard was selected by the Houston Astros in the 17th round while Barzilli was later taken by Houston in the 29th round.
With TCU hoping to improve the depth of their pitching staff, Howard’s return is huge as Mitchell Traver and Brian Trieglaff are negotiating pro deals. Howard finished the season with a 3.19 ERA, made 17 starts with 10 victories and was 4-0 in Big 12 Tournament, Regional, Super Regional, and College World Series games. You can expect Howard to lead a rotation next season.
Barzilli finished the year with a .339 batting average which was the second best on the team behind Luken Baker. Barzilli also finished in the top five of almost every offensive category. The Horned Frogs offense was phenomenal this past season and with Barzilli back, you can bet the offense will be just as good if not better next year. Hopefully for Barzilli, next season won’t end on such a sour note as his bat seemed to go quiet in the postseason.
The return of both Howard and Barzilli will help TCU in more ways than just their talent, but with their leadership and experience.
